Hyderabad-based pediatrician Dr Sivaranjani Santosh is striking headlines across the internet and winning the love of everyone. Her long battle in bringing a strong directive regarding the usage of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) finally met with a positive result.

Cut to the facts, ORS is a part of every household. Everytime, when kids and even adults fall sick or suffer from dehydration or diarrhea, the doctors usually advise to consume ORS. ORS is a specific mix of salt and sugar that you dissolve in clean water. But, of late, many companies that manufacture the fruit drinks also confuse the consumers regarding the ORS.

So far, the rules allowed non-carbonated beverages and fruit drinks to include the term “ORS” in their names. This was okay as long as the products included disclaimers but the companies cleverly confuse the consumers by naming the drink as ORSL and other similar names.

Dr Sivaranjani has been fighting against this that this should not be allowed. After her long battle, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) introduced a new rule to protect children’s health across India. The directive says that no brand can sell ORS unless it gets official approval from the World Health Organization (WHO). Sivaranjani has been trying to ensure only safe and effective products are available to those in need, highlighting the importance of keeping children healthy, especially during public health challenges.

The FSSAI has cancelled previous orders to take a strong stance against misleading labels. Dr Sivaranjani Santosh has been actively campaigning against this mislabeling.
