Indians are the biggest mobile data users in the world, with people using an average of 36GB per month. The data is based on a mobility report by Swedish network company Ericsson taken from around 100 live networks covering all major regions of the world. The 36GB usage is higher than that used by markets in the developed nations like US, Western Europe and China. The heavy usage of mobile data is driven mainly by the low-cost data plans and affordable smartphones. This also indicates a profound shift in how the nation engages with the digital sphere.
The use of mobile data is being pushed due to strong content-streaming ecosystem, in addition to the steadily increasing popularity of short and long-form videos on social media. Ericsson also projects that India’s monthly data consumption could double up to 65GB per user by 2031, growing at an annual rate of 10 per cent.
The report further mentioned that an average smartphone user in the “India, Nepal and Bhutan region” uses around 36 GB of mobile data per month, against a global average of 21 GB. Last year, the monthly usage in the region was recorded at 33 GB. It also predicted that in 2031, the global average data usage would be at 39GB against the 65GB projected for the Indian region. Currently, the usage in Western Europe and North America stands at 25GB, in China at 23 GB and in Latin America at 14 GB.
Further, it predicted that 5G subscriptions would swell to 394 million by the end of 2025. By the end of the decade, the figure is expected to surpass 1 billion, capturing 79% of the total market, making India a key global telecommunications hub. The intensive use is majorly fueled by the rapid rollout and uptake of 5G technology and the burgeoning market for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA). This technology provides high-speed broadband, continuing to accelerate data traffic growth.
