Mass shootings are recurring tragedies in countries with liberal gun laws. After last week’s shooting incident in Australia’s Bondi beach, another similar mass firing is reported in a township in Johannesburg of South Africa this Sunday.
As per reports, at least ten people including three children were killed in Bekkersdal township of Johannesburg city. Armed gunmen shot people randomly in the streets of the township which is located some 40 kms away from the city. The shooting happened near a tavern or informal bar in Bekkersdal, which is close to several major goldmines of South Africa.
Nearly ten people have been wounded in this mass shooting. The motive behind this rampage is not known but it is reported that about a dozen unknown suspects arrived in a white kombi and a silver sedan and opened firing and fled the scene of offense. The South African police quickly launched a manhunt for the offenders.
This is the second shooting incident in South Africa in less a month. Two weeks ago, a dozen people were killed after gunmen stormed a hostel near Pretoria and opened firing. South Africa has a high crime rate and also has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
