Breaking: Indigo Fined 22 Crores by DGCA

Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA), which runs under the Central Aviation Ministry, has imposed a penalty of 22.20 Crores on Indigo airlines for the chaotic handling of flight operations that caused inconvenience to more than 3 lakh passengers in December last year.

According to an official statement issued by the aviation regulator, the penal action was taken after reviewing the airline’s operational lapses and inefficient handling of the disruptions that led to huge commotion among passengers.

After a thorough enquiry into the mismanagement of flight operations that stranded thousands of passengers at different airports across the country, DGCA has found that overworked crew rosters, poor operational planning and improper handling of FDTL norms has led to the large scale disruptions. Around 2500 flights were cancelled and 1800 flights were delayed during December 3rd to 5th.

The four member committee constituted by by the DGCA under the directions of Ministry of Civil Aviation has submitted the report on the irregularities that led to the biggest flight disruption in the country’s history.

Based on the findings, DGCA slapped 20.40 Crore fine for continued non compliance of Civil Aviation Requirements for 68 days and additional 1.80 Crores for six instances of non compliance amounting a total of 22.20 Crores as penalty.

The committee found that Indigo failed to maintain adequate operational buffers and did not act promptly on the Flight Duty Limitation Norms as prescribed by the DGCA earlier in 2025.

The DGCA has further been instructed to take stringent action against officials who are responsible for the disruptions and asked to submit a compliance report immediately.
