Desert Tragedy: 49 Dead Due To Thirst After Vehicle Breakdown

Travelling through remote areas inside barren desert lands can be extremely challenging and life threatening too due to lack of proper facilities. Survival becomes very tough beyond a few days if one is lost in a desert which is inaccessible from habitual areas. We often come across desert tragedies when travellers lost their way.

In what could be one of the biggest desert tragedies in recent times, at least 49 people have tragically lost their lives to extreme thirst in a remote stretch of the Sahara Desert in northern Niger after the lorry they were traveling in broke down.

The victims were returning from the Malian town of Telhandek after celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. According to local authorities, the vehicle veered off its intended course and became stranded more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Assamaka, a crucial border town between Niger and Algeria. They all are identified as citizens of Niger.

Only two individuals from the group managed to survive as they walked through the desert to the nearby Assamaka city and alerted the emergency services. A rescue team dispatched to the scene found that the rest of the members in the group were lying dead due to extreme dehydration.

It is believed that the passengers and the driver spent several days attempting to repair the vehicle under grueling conditions, but their efforts ultimately ended with no solution. Trapped in a hostile desert environment with scorching temperatures and no access to water or supply points, all 49 people succumbed to dehydration. Their bodies were discovered scattered around the immobile vehicle.

The rescue team has luckily averted a another major tragedy as they discovered and successfully assisted a second broken-down lorry. This vehicle had been stranded for three days due to a battery failure and was carrying more than 60 exhausted travelers. Soldiers provided them with water and helped fix their vehicle, allowing them to continue their journey safely.
