It is already known that the world is witnessing a first wave of artificial intelligence enhancement as it is becoming increasingly incorporated in day-to-day activities.
Now there are several reports about the freshwater consumption aspect of artificial intelligence hubs, and this has become a major cause of concern.
The fundamental thing about artificial intelligence data centre is that they require constant supply of freshwater every single second. According to a few social media reports, it is established that ChatGPT alone uses around 148 million liters of water every single day for its operations.
If we combine the usage capacity of all the artificial intelligence platforms, it could be around 2 billion L of water that is being consumed every single day. All of this is freshwater that is otherwise used for human consumption.
The shocking thing is that certain states in the United States had to give up on agriculture as they had to supply the freshwater for the data centres. We have arrived at a point where AI centres are becoming more important than agriculture which is very dangerous.
Considering that all the major data centres across the globe operate on water cooling systems that require millions of litres of water, every single day to keep the GPU and TPU cool. This is a constant process and it is not going to stop until a new restructuring happens.
This is the reason why several countries have been protesting against these data centres, and there is a full-fledged public campaign happening against the same.
