The industrial tragedy in the Vizag steel plant is still fresh in the memory of the common public, and sadly we have another significant addition to the list in the form of a gas leak inside a factory in Tamil Nadu.
According to the latest reports, an ammonia gas leak was reported today at the St. Peter’s Paul Seafoods Exports facility located in Kannigaipair near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district.
The nature of this gas leak was so very significant that multiple individuals working inside the factory, sustained severe medical conditions, and seven of them are reported to be dead now. Along with that, nine people are in critical condition. In total around 60 people are currently hospitalised.
The rescue team, comprising 30 NDRF personnel from Chennai, reached the location equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), gas detection devices, and specialized CBRN rescue equipment to carry out emergency response operations. Rescue and mitigation efforts are continuing at the site.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has instructed to form a Committee to enquire into the Ammonia Gas Leak incident.
A 3 member committee with Director of Industrial Safety and Health, Member Secretary, Pollution Control Board and Additional Director of Public Health has been formed to submit an interim report in 24 hours and final report in 3 days.
