In less than a month after the heartbreaking hotel tragedy in Delhi which killed at least 21 people, a massive fire broke out on Monday at a three-stare commercial building in the Aliganj area of northwest Lucknow. The building housed several shops, a gaming zone, and a student coaching centre.
Unfortunately, at least 14 students lost their lives, and four others were injured. The fire started on the top floor and spread rapidly, trapping many people inside. Out of desperation, several students jumped from the first floor to escape the thick smoke and flames. Videos from the scene showed bystanders helping injured students who had jumped or fallen to safety.
Firefighters and police rushed to the scene and brought the fire under control after about an hour. Officials have completed a search of the building and confirmed that no one else is trapped inside. The four injured students were taken to the KGMC Trauma Centre for urgent medical care.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak visited the site and ordered a strict investigation into how the fire started. He promised that anyone found responsible for safety failures would face severe consequences. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also cancelled his schedule to return to Lucknow and oversee the situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and announced government financial aid of ₹2 lakh for the families of each student who died, and ₹50,000 for each injured person.
