Don’t Post Videos From Court, Supreme Court Orders!

The Indian social media networks are blasting with the news and updates about the ongoing Delhi students protests. Instagram is absolutely loaded with pictures and videos from the protests, and there are several videos circulating about the Supreme Court as well.

In view of all the social media activity that has been happening with regard to the Delhi protest and the subsequent legal recourse at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice has passed a new order today.

Supreme Court bench led by CJI Surya Kant passed an interim order that “there shall be no extraction, modification, dissemination, posting, re-posting, uploading or monetisation of audio/video recordings of the judicial proceedings on social media or other digital platforms without the prior permission of the Registrar General of the concerned High Courts or the Secretary General of the Supreme Court.”

This would essentially mean that the videos from the Supreme Court cannot be shared on social media and doing so can invite severe legal consequences.

This is in view of the recent news reports about the Supreme Court, where it was said the court had rejected the plea to watch the videos of police violence on students, saying the court doesn’t have the time for it.

Now the Supreme Court has issued an entry order, asking individuals and companies not to share the videos from the proceedings inside the premises. This is perhaps to avoid wrong penetration of unverified news and videos on social media.
