India is consistently moving from the conventional set up of marriage to increased volume of live in relationships these days. Many people are referring to live together before marriage in order to check compatibility and meet obvious needs.
On that note, we have latest judgement from the Supreme Court, which could bring a pretty certificate change in the core concept of live in relationships these days.
The Supreme Court has extended Section 498-A IPC (cruelty) to live-in-relationships which are in the nature of marriage.
This would essentially mean that a woman can raise domestic violence case under the 498A IPC section if she’s in a live in relationship and experiences domestic violence from her partner.
This could change the entire dynamic of this relationship set up in India as the consequences could be pretty huge. Men will have to be extremely careful about action even in live in relationships as any abuse could lead to legal consequences.
