Hyderabadis Spend 123 Hours on Roads Due to Traffic Congestion

Hyderabad continues to struggle with heavy traffic congestion, with commuters spending an average of 123 hours on the roads in 2025, according to the latest TomTom Traffic Index report.

The city recorded an average traffic congestion level of 55.5% last year. Commuters spent 1 hour and 16 minutes moreon the roads compared to the previous year. However, the overall congestion level was 1.3 percentage points lower than in 2024.

The growing number of vehicles is one of the major reasons for the traffic problem. Hyderabad’s vehicle population has nearly doubled over the past decade. More people are also choosing private vehicles instead of public transport or car-pooling. Around 80 lakh vehicles are currently estimated to be using the city’s roads.

Evening Traffic Worse Than Morning

The evening rush hour remained more congested than the morning rush hour in Hyderabad. During the morning peak hours, a 10-km journey took an average of 34 minutes and 53 seconds. The congestion level stood at 66.4%, while the average speed was 17.2 kmph.

The situation was worse in the evening. The same 10-km journey took 39 minutes and 28 seconds, with congestion rising to 85.7%. The average speed dropped to just 15.2 kmph.

August 30 Was the Worst Traffic Day

According to TomTom, August 30, 2025, was the worst day for travel in Hyderabad. The city recorded an average congestion level of 78% on that day. At around 6 pm, congestion reached 113%, while commuters could cover only 3.3 km in 15 minutes. A 10-km journey took an average of 32 minutes and 37 seconds on the worst day, which was 11 seconds longer than the corresponding figure in 2024.

Average Speed Remains Low

Across 2025, the average distance covered in 15 minutes in Hyderabad was 4.6 km, almost the same as the previous year. The average speed on highways was 34.1 kmph, which was 0.6 kmph higher than in 2024. However, the average speed during rush hours was only 16.1 kmph, remaining almost unchanged from the previous year.

The TomTom Traffic Index is based on anonymously collected trip data from drivers across the Hyderabad metropolitan area and its road network, including major roads and highways.

With traffic increasing and average speeds remaining low during peak hours, Hyderabad residents continue to spend a significant amount of time travelling on the city’s roads.
