Even before people could come to terms with the tragic hit-and-run case in Rajahmundry that claimed the life of 28-year-old medico Dr Priyanka, another tragedy has struck Andhra Pradesh.
24-yr-old Shaik Asifa, daughter of Vijayawada Traffic DCP Sheikh Shireen Begum, died in a road accident on the outskirts of Guntur on Sunday. Asifa suffered severe injuries in the crash and died at the spot. Four others travelling with her were also injured.
According to reports, Asifa regularly visited a gym in Tadepalli, where she became acquainted with gym owner Ruthvik and other members Vamsi, Sudheer and Avinash. The five friends reportedly travelled from Vijayawada in a car to visit Chirala beach. The accident occurred on the highway near Etukuru Bypass on the outskirts of Guntur. A government Civil Supplies Department lorry carrying ration supplies was travelling ahead of their car.
The lorry driver reportedly applied the brakes suddenly. The car following the lorry lost control, crashed into the lorry and then hit the road divider. Asifa was seated in the rear of the car and suffered severe injuries. She died at the spot. Avinash, Sudheer, Vamsi and Ruthvik sustained injuries in the accident. Local residents who witnessed the accident alerted the police and helped shift the injured to a nearby private hospital.
After receiving information about the accident, DCP Shireen Begum reached the hospital. She reportedly collapsed after learning about her daughter’s death and was given medical treatment. DCP Shireen Begum was later shifted to a private hospital in Vijayawada for further treatment. A post-mortem examination was conducted on Asifa’s body before it was handed over to her family members.
Nallapadu Circle Inspector Bhaskar registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident. Police are examining the circumstances that led to the crash, including the reported sudden braking by the lorry and the subsequent loss of control of the car.
