Trump Calls Nvidia CEO on Stage to Defend AI Boom

US President Donald Trump made a surprise phone call to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during a live event and used the moment to dismiss fears that artificial intelligence could eventually threaten humanity.

Interestingly, Jensen Huang was speaking live on stage at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles on Monday when this surprise incident took place as Jensen received a call from Trump. The Nvidia chief answered the call and put the President on speaker, allowing Trump to directly address the audience.

Trump began the conversation on a lighter note, joking that Huang could design some of the world’s most complex computer chips but apparently could not figure out how to put him on speaker, thus indicating him to put on the speaker.

Trump then raised the topic about the future of AI and the growing debate over AI safety. Trump claimed that concerns about AI taking over the world were being exaggerated and said China would be the biggest beneficiary if American companies were forced to slow down their AI development. “I’m telling you, it’s all a hoax,” Trump said while talking about fears surrounding AI.

Trump also strongly backed the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure in the US, describing data centres as the “oil of the next 20, 25 years.”

He said data centres could make companies and states wealthy, while arguing that AI would be even more important than the internet. “Whoever wins AI wins,” Trump said, underlining his belief that the US must stay ahead in the global AI race. Donald Trump also dismissed fears of a future where robots could take control of the world.

“The robots are not going to be taking over the world and that’s not going to happen,” he said, adding that AI would not take over the world and calling the entire concern “a hoax.”

While dismissing the concerns, Trump acknowledged that the AI industry needs to move carefully. However, he made it clear that he does not want safety concerns to become a reason to stop or significantly slow down AI development. “We have to be a little bit careful, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop an industry,” Trump said.

Trump also criticised opposition to new data centre projects, arguing that efforts to slow construction could ultimately benefit America’s competitors, particularly China.

Huang agreed with Trump’s position and said Nvidia would work to ensure that the benefits of the AI race reach the wider American economy. “We’re going to make sure that everybody wins in the AI race in America. Every industry, every company, every state, every people,” Huang said. The exchange comes at a time when AI safety has become a major issue among technology leaders.

It can be noted that Nvidia sits at the centre of this AI boom, with its powerful GPUs providing much of the computing power required to train and run advanced AI models. Trump’s comments therefore underline the US government’s strong push to maintain American leadership in the rapidly growing AI race.
