In a startling case, a wanted German criminal named Edgar Zeibat had been stranded at the Delhi International Airport for 66 days due to the lockdown. Edgar has been facing criminal charges in Germany. After spending over 2 months at the airport, Edgar finally left for Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 12th.
Edgar had arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on March 18th from Hanoi, Vietnam, as a transit passenger. His next flight was to Istanbul, Turkey. However, due to the sudden suspension of the international flight services, Edgar made a secluded spot in the transit area in the airport his home since he didn’t have an Indian visa.
The airport authorities consulted the German embassy, which refused to take his custody due to the criminal charges for violence and he is on a foreign land. The clueless airport authorities began taking care of Edgar by providing him tight security, meals three times a day, fresh clothes, a recliner and a mosquito net. He spent most of his time reading and singing songs, interacting with the housekeeping staff and fully co-operated with the authorities.
Last week, authorities at the airport tried to accommodate Edgar on a relief flight to Ankara, Turkey. However, the Turkish authorities refused to accept him since the flight was meant exclusively for Turkish citizens stranded in India. After his transit period exceeded, Edgar was even served a ‘Leave India Notice’ by the Indian authorities.
Finally, Edgar booked himself on a KLM Airlines flight to Amsterdam and departed India in the wee hours of May 12th. Apparently, the Delhi Airport authorities had offered him passage to Germany, but he declined it and choose to stay at the IGI Airport until flight operations were resumed.
