US: ‘Do Not Travel’ Advisory For 80% Of Countries, India Among Them

The US Department of State made an announcement of a travel advisory update amid the big surge in Covid-19 infection rate across the world. The State Department on Monday plans to issue new travel advisories for many countries and urges U.S. citizens not to travel abroad.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) mentioned in its update that Covid-19 in India is at a ‘Very High Level’ and travelers should avoid all travel to India. It mentioned, ‘Because of the current situation in India even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants and should avoid all travel to India. If you must travel to India, get fully vaccinated before travel. All travelers should wear a mask, stay 6 feet from others, avoid crowds, and wash their hands.’

The State Department’s media note reads, ‘the Covid-19 pandemic continues to pose unprecedented risks to travelers. In light of those risks, the Department of State strongly recommends U.S. citizens reconsider all travel abroad.’

It further says, ‘Our Advisories also take into account logistical factors, including in-country testing availability and current travel restrictions for US citizens. This update will result in a significant increase in the number of countries at Level 4: Do Not Travel, to approximately 80% of countries worldwide. This does not imply a reassessment of the current health situation in a given country, but rather reflects an adjustment in the State Department’s Travel Advisory system to rely more on CDC’s existing epidemiological assessments.’
