The 32-year-old Telugu NRI, Sunil K Akula, who resides in Texas, has received a lengthy prison sentence of up to 56 months, and three years of supervised release (parole) on the charges of kidnapping and stalking his then-wife. Upon completion of his sentence, the court also said that Sunil will be banished from the country back to India.

In November 2020, Sunil K Avula pleaded guilty to the charges of kidnapping, stalking, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Coming into the crime details, Sunil and his then-wife parted ways back in 2019. But, the man travelled all the way from his home in Texas to Agawam, Massachusetts in August 2019 to confront her.

Soon after, he was said to have assaulted and forced his wife to leave her apartment and get into a car with him, stating that he was taking her back to Texas. Mr Akula drove her through multiple states and on the way, he was repeatedly assaulting her and forced her to send a resignation e-mail to her employer. He also smashed her laptop and threw it on the side of the highway, as per federal prosecutors.

The report further says that Akula stopped at a Knox County, Tennessee hotel, where he again assaulted his wife and later opened the door to leave the hotel room and was arrested by local law enforcement officers. During his custody, Akula also reportedly made phone calls to family in India instructing them to contact his father-in-law to convince his wife to withdraw her statements to law enforcement, a media release said.
