India is currently witnessing a string of petrifying fungi and amid rising mucormycosis aka black fungus, white fungus and yellow fungus cases, one more invasive fungal infection called Nasal aspergillosis has been reported in Gujarat’s Vadodara.
Just like other fungi, this fungal infection has been reported among both COVID-19 patients and in covid-recovered people. Today, at least eight patients with aspergillosis are currently undergoing treatment in Vadodara. Pulmonary aspergillosis is seen in immuno-compromised patients but aspergillosis of the sinuses is sporadic and uncommon.
It is made clear as of now that the rising fungi cases could be due to the usage of steroids for treating Covid patients, the use of non-sterile water used for hydrating the oxygen supply and unsterilized nose swabs. Talking about the new fungus, aspergillosis cannot be classified by colour codes as it is found in different colours. In some cases, it shows brown, bluish-green, yellowish-green, green, and even grey.
Currently, Vadodara has 262 patients undergoing treatment for mucormycosis in two government hospitals. Adding to that, 8 more patients with aspergillosis have been admitted.
What is Aspergillosis?
Aspergillosis is an infection caused by Aspergillus, a common mold (type of fungus) that lives indoors and outdoors. It is common for people to inhale Aspergillus on a daily basis without getting sick. But due to Covid conditions and now relatively weakened immune systems/ lung diseases, a higher risk of developing health problems due to Aspergillus is observed. Allergic reactions, lung infections, and infections in other organs are some of the health issues pertinent to Aspergillosis.
