Doctors, nurses and many frontline warriors are doing unprecedented work in these Covid-19 times. According to data, close to 600 doctors across the country have died while treating covid patients. Instead of acknowledging their work, nearly 30 men brutally thrashed a doctor.
This horrific incident happened in Assam’s Hojai district. Reportedly a young man with high Covid symptoms reached a hospital and he needs an oxygen bed urgently. But the condition of the patient was quite critical and the doctors who noticed him, tried their best. Yet the young man could not survive.
Outraged by the death, a mob attacked the resident doctor who is identified as Seuj Kumar Senapati. The video of this attack surfaced on social media and we see the mob cruelly kicking and thrashing the doctor.
This video reached Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma and he expressed deep anger. Immediately Assam Police were summoned to arrest the men who attacked the doctor and within 12 hours, 24 men were detained. CM Sarma added that he is personally monitoring this investigation and promised that justice will be served.
Off late such incidents are becoming frequent. Last week one such incident got reported in Hyderabad. The TS government cancelled the licence of the hospital upon the complaint from the victims. Nonetheless, attacks on doctors and frontline workers are highly unacceptable and if the culprits are punished severely, it would set an example for the rest of the country.
