Covid Emergency: Spectators Banned From Tokyo Olympics

After declaring a state of emergency in Tokyo, the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics banned all spectators from events in the city. This means there will be no spectators for the summer Olympics at Tokyo venues.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshide Suga confirmed the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics 2020 will take place under a Coronavirus state of emergency. After today’s meeting, Seiko Hashimoto from the Japanese Olympic Committee said, ‘A very heavy judgment was made. We have no choice but to hold the Games in a limited way.’

Seiko offered her apologies to those who had already purchased tickets to the Games. However, the spectators may still be considered for venues outside of Tokyo. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the state of emergency in Tokyo will go into effect Monday and last through Aug. 22. The Games run through Aug. 8, starting from July 23.
