It is already known that the United States president Donald Trump had imposed unruly tariffs on global countries, including India for purchasing oil from Russia. This was restrained to an extent after India cut down their oil intake from Russia in accordance with Trump’s wishes.
But due to the prevailing situation in the Middle East, India is left with no other option but to procure oil from Russia. And this is where things went south as the United States “allowed” India to get oil from Russia.
United States treasury secretary Scott Bessent wrote “To enable oil to keep flowing into the global market, the Treasury Department is issuing a temporary 30-day waiver to allow Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil. This deliberately short-term measure will not provide significant financial benefit to the Russian government.”
India is an essential partner of the United States, and we fully anticipate that New Delhi will ramp up purchases of U.S. oil, he added.
The fact that India needs the permission of United States to procure oil from its strategic partners like Russia didn’t sit well with social media users and some political observers.
People have started to question the foreign policy of the Indian government as they are requiring US permission even for oil purchase which isn’t a good sign.
