Of course, the first look poster of Samantha’s Shakuntalam hasn’t convinced many as they thought the star heroine is not really appearing such ethereal. At the same time, many audiences are said to be checking the internet to find out if this film of Gunasekhar is unique or it has any ancestors already.
Apparently, Shakuntalam is the story of Shakuntala and her love for King Dushyanta, which was written as a play by Mahakavi Kalidasa centuries ago. When googled or Youtubed, a Telugu film titled Shakuntala, featuring legendary NT Ramarao and Saroja Devi which was released in 1966 is turning up. People are watching this film as well to find out what is the complete story of this mythological figure.
On the other hand, in 1941, legendary actor-director, Shantaram made a film of this story in which Jayashree appeared as Shakuntala. Currently, many Telugu audiences are said to be watching these two movies on Youtube to know the in-depth story of the movie. Anyway, the fact remains the same that Samantha’s movie made film lovers search for these two old classic movies.
Now that a lot of technical and visual effects support has come, Gunasekhar might have focused a lot on the look and feel aspect rather than just giving preference to costumes and storyline alone. Anyway, fantasy cinemas in India don’t work with just graphics alone but they need wow moments and loads of drama. Let’s see what will Sam and Guna do.
