Post the success of the Baahubali series, the Indian film industry started focusing on high-budget films that have a universal appeal. Releasing these movies in multiple languages will help the makers in getting huge collections at the box office. These films also has an advantage to attract the audience from different languages.
Due to this trend, around eight of the 12 most expensive Indian films are all set to release in the next two years. All these flicks have larger than life stories, heavy CGI and action sequences. Irrespective of the star cast, the filmmakers are betting high on the CGI.
The upcoming big projects include films like RRR, Radhe Shyam, Adipurush, Project K, Prithviraj, Brahmastra: Part One, Ponniyin Selvan: Part One and Suryaputra Mahavir Karna. A few more are in the pipeline too.
All these films are heavy on VFX effects. Generally, Hollywood production houses like Marvel Studios come up with high-level VFX based movie franchises and most of them end up as blockbuster ventures at the box office.
Now, it looks like Indian filmmakers are also opting for the same route and are shelling out huge amounts of money in making CGI-heavy films and are trying to build movie franchises with multiple parts. In order to compete with the emerging OTT platforms, the Indian filmmakers will have to promise a terrific visual experience in theatres. That’s the only way to keep the theatrical business running.
All these films will definitely have a theatrical release and these are the ones that have the capacity to pull audiences to the theatres.
We have to see if this formula turns out to be successful in the Indian film industry.
