Report: Remake-Phobia Hits Bollywood Big Time

The super success of films like KGF, Baahubali and RRR in Bollywood has proved that ‘south’ content is currently the hot favorite of the Hindi audiences. At the same time, the successful remake of ‘Arjun Reddy’ in Bollywood as “Kabir Singh” has further strengthened the hopes of Bollywood producers that remaking a Telugu or Tamil film will be worth doing. But then, 2022 isn’t the year for them it seems.

With Kabir Singh doing good, Shahid Kapoor picked up the “Jersey” remake, but that film tumbled at the box office. Similarly, Akshay Kumar’s Gaddalakonda Ganesh remake, Bachhan Panday; and newcomer hero’s MCA remake Nikamma, and a remake of Tamil film Vikram Vedha with the same title, have all bitten the dust at the box office. While Jersey is carved by the same Telugu director, Vikram Vedha is also made by the same original directors only, but still, things didn’t work out. Even Janhvi Kapoor’s remake of Nayan’s Kolamavu Kokila, as “Good Luck Jerry” hasn’t failed to excite audiences though it was directly released on OTT.

No stopping at the south content, this year Aamir Khan has come up with the remake of Hollywood’s oscar winning movie “Forrest Gump”, but the film titled “Laal Singh Chaddha” just vanished into a thin air. The same is the case with Taapsee’s Dobaara which happens to be the remake of the Spanish thriller, Mirage. Looks like 2022 is not the year for Bollywood to depend on remakes, and then they have many others lined up. That’s the reason why a remake phobia is catching up with Bollywood heroes now, and they are asking Telugu and Tamil directors to approach them with direct scripts.

Right now, Ala Vaikuntapurramlo remake Shehzada is coming up now with Karthik Aryan in the lead, while Drishyam 2 is being remade by Ajay Devgan. We wonder what these films are going to do at the Hindi box office.
