Kantara – the movie emerged as one of the biggest successes the country has seen. The man behind it, Rishab Shetty, the actor, and director of the film talked to Nayandeep Rakshit in an exclusive interview for Gulte.com
The interview was supposed to happen on live when Rishab Shetty was in Mumbai, but did not. Now Nayandeep cornered him for a quick chat on an online interview.
Nayandeep asked Rishab Shetty if the success of Kantara lies in making people know about the culture and making them intrigued with the folklore they did not know earlier. Rishab Shetty says that if there are a lot of discussions happening about the movie and the culture shown in it, the purpose is served and it is successful in a way.
Talking about the collections and numbers, Rishab was clear that neither he nor hombale films will disclose the numbers. It is just the people are giving numbers and he says it is a good thing that people are spreading the positive word and giving raise in footfalls. He says it is more important than how many people are watching it and how it is running successfully even after five weeks. Rishab laughs it off but did not want to reveal the budget of the film also.
Rishab further revealed that it was planned to complete the shoot in 75 days, but they were able to finish it in 96 days.
When asked about the difference in opinion when Rishab’s other good movie Bell Bottom was released in OTT, it was not received well but Kantara is receiving great accolades, Rishab Shetty says nobody could estimate the success based on the previous film. He said he put in the same effort for Kantara as he did for Bell Bottom or Kirik Party.
Yash Called Me
Nayandeep asked Rishab if Yash calling him to wish him the best before Kantara’s release was true.
Rishab Shetty says Yash called him to wish him the best after watching the trailer. Rishab says he and Yash know each other for a long time and their initial struggling days coincide. Yash used to work in Television and Rishab used to be an assistant director in films.
‘We met each other but were not close then. After many years of his wonderful journey, ‘KGF 1’ was released. We both do not have any background. We are here solely on our hard work. It has been an inspirational journey, he said.
What did you have to say about Prabhas, who watched and tweeted about Kantara?
Prabhas sir is an all-India superstar, not just Telugu. He taking out his valuable time amidst his shoot of ‘Salaar’ to watch the movie twice means a lot. Only a man with a heart of gold and a pure soul can do this. Prabhas sir is so happy and called to wish, we spoke about Kantara for about 10 mins.
Gulte was one of the very few publications to publish a review of ‘Kantara’. If you read it, it says that this movie would work well and is a visual extravaganza. It was not released in Hindi by then. Did you read any reviews?
I would like to thank Gulte. I could not read reviews. The word of mouth spread like a wildfire, So did not read any reviews. I used to check what people had to say about every film of mine. These reviews helped Kantara reach many people.
Not Interested in Bollywood?
About working in Bollywood, Rishab Shetty says he has been receiving so much love, support, and blessings for Kantara from there, I respect them. But definitely, we will make a film in Kannada and release it in multiple languages. He said his preference is to work in Kannada and intends to work from Kannada.
Working With Ram Charan?
We heard you are in talks for a film with Ram Charan?
No, that was just a rumor. I am not doing any film with Ram Charan sir and I haven’t met him. I would do a film with him hopefully in the future. He is one of the finest actors and I like him a lot.
Recently, you met Rajinikanth sir. What did you talk about?
I have been his fan for a long time. Itwas a fanboy moment. To get his blessings mean the world to me.
Your friendship with Rakshit Shetty is often discussed. we have seen him support you. How is the friendship evolved?
Our beginnings were together. The friendship and professionalism kept growing with each passing day and film. The bond is the same all the years. We are there for each other.
Sai Pallavi Or Samantha or Rashmika?
Who would you choose to work with among Samantha, Rashmika, Keerthy Suresh, and Sai Pallavi?
I prefer working with newcomers as they do not have barriers. I really like the work of Sai Pallavi and Samantha. They are the finest performers and best actors.
About Samantha’s health
Samantha was recently diagnosed with Myosotis. What was your reaction when you learned about it?
It is really sad about that. Hope she recovers soon and does what she does best with God’s blessings.
