Will This Film Works Out Like A Kantara?

Once a particular type of film works, there will be this absolute fetish amongst producers and distributors to come up with similar types of stories and outputs. As “Kantara” worked big time at the Telugu box office, no doubt, many producers are expecting to repeat similar stuff. And here is one such dubbing film, Puli, that is hoping to make it big.

The Malayalam film “Pathonpatham Noottandu” (means ‘19th Century’) got released in the first week of September this year and hasn’t made much impact at the box office as it netted around ₹8+ crores only.

However, director Vinayan has succeeded to create this 18th-century drama set in the erstwhile Travancore kingdom which is based on the life of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, who fought against upper castes and the British for looking down on the downtrodden.

In his creation, the director crafted many bold sequences, including that of semi-nude women beaten up and tax levied on their breasts. That is not true as per historians, but director Vinayan stated that he took artistic liberties. In a couple of weeks, this film is going to release at the Telugu box office.

However, with the original Pathonpatham Noottandu available on Amazon Prime with sub-titles, and the film being quite bold about caste conflicts, we have to see how far it works like a Kantara as the makers are hoping so.

Siju Wilson and Kayadu Lohar are the leading actors of the film, while Poonam Bajwa is seen as a Travancore queen. Maharashtrian beauty Kayadu Lohar who hasn’t even promoted her debut Telugu film ‘Alluri’ that featured Srivishnu in the lead, is the leading lady of this movie. She’s already in Hyderabad to promote this dubbed movie now.
