Double Dhamaka At The Box Office

Many cinema lovers recently were tickled pink to find out that on June 14, not one but two of Chandini Chowdary’s films will be hitting the theatres. They are Yevam, a hard hitting police procedural and Music Shop Murthy, a slice-of-life comedy where Chandini will be seen alongside Ajay Ghosh. It is a matter of pride and joy for an actor to have two of their films playing in the theatres at the same time, though this might have happened more due to the desire of producers’ rather than actors. This is also not the first time an actor in TFI has seen two of his or her films hit theatres on the same day. Here is a trip down memory lane, as we look at examples of actors enjoying a twin release day.

NTR Sr

The first superstar of Telugu cinema, who has famously played the role of Sri Krishna in hundreds of films, had two films of his release on the same day twice in his career. While Appu Chesi Pappu Kudu and Sampurna Ramayanam released on January 14,1959, he had the films Pendli Pilupu and Sathee Sulochana release two years later on May 5, 1961.

Krishna

Superstar Krishna had a whopping 11 releases in the year of 1984, a number that was more a norm rather than an exception. In the same year on 1984, the actor saw his films Iddharu Dongalu and Yuddham release the same day on January 14.

Chiranjeevi

Chiranjeevi enjoyed the most prolific run in his career during the 80s. On September 19, 1980, his films Kaali and Thathayya Prema Leelalu released on the same day. Nearly two years later, he saw another twin release day in his career when his films Patnam Vacchina Pathivrathalu and Tingu Rangadu hit the screens on October 1, 1982.

Balakrishna

Balayya Babu saw two vastly different films of his release on September 3, 1993. First was the masala entertainer Bangaru Bullodu where he was paired with Ramya Krishna and Raveena Tandon. Second film was Kondarami Reddy’s action film Nippu Rava, where he starred alongside Vijayshanti.

Nani

Coming to some more recent examples, we have Nani who saw his films Yevade Subramanyam and Janda Pai Kapiraju release on March 21, 2015. While Yevade Subramanyam was directed by the then-debutant director Nag Ashwin, Janda Pai Kapiraju had Nani essay a double role for the first time in his career.

Shruti Haasan

Though these films have released a day after each other and not on the same day, Shruti Haasan deserves a notable mention for being the leading lady of Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy, which were the Sankranti season releases of 2023.
