Official: Tollywood Leading Rs 1000 Cr Race

Indian cinema has started to expand beyond primal expectations. Back in the day, it was a rarity to see a film to ₹500 crore gross at the box office. Cut to today, Indian cinema has started to produce thousand crore grocers on a very regular basis.

Coming to the much desired Rs 1000 crore grosser market, it is largely dominated by two film industries – Tollywood(4) and Bollywood(3).

The most interesting transition here is that Tollywood, which was looked down upon by Bollywood for many decades saying it harbors only mass masala films, has now beaten Bollywood in box office terms.

With as many as four films that have crossed over Rs 1000 crore at the global box office, Tollywood is ahead of Bollywood in this bracket.

Tollywood’s Baahubali 2, RRR, Kalki, and Pushpa 2 have achieved this feat thus far. The most recent addition is obviously Pushpa 2 which joined this bracket on December 11, under a week from its theatrical release.

On the other hand, we have Bollywood’s Dangal, Jawaan, and Pathaan in the Rs 1000 crore bracket. One clarification here is that Dangal could breach the thousand crore mark only due to the enormously run in the Chinese market which contributed to nearly half of his revenues.

Jawaan and Pathaan were the two box office sensations from SRK in 2023. In total, Bollywood has 3 films in this bracket.

Then we have KGF 2 from the Kannada land which was stupendously supported by the Telugu and Hindi markets. This is the first and only film from Kannada to achieve this feat thus far. Kannada cinema well and truly punched above its weight with this actioner.

Tamil cinema, which was widely respected for its craftiness and rugged presentations is still miles away from this feat. The likes of Robo 2 and Leo were projected to have a big run but they couldn’t come remotely close. The lack of takers in the Hindi market is the reason behind this affirmative cap on Tamil cinema.

Coming back to Tollywood, this bustling film industry isn’t done yet either. With more pan Indian biggies lined up for release in the due course, the separation from the rest of the film industries will only get wider. The only real competitor for Telugu cinema now is Bollywood and that too at a distant second position.
