Bollywood’s first biggest hit of the year has come in the form of Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal. This year, the Hindi film industry witnessed films like Fateh, Sky Force, Emergency, Deva, Azad and Loveyapa. With one flop after another, January and the first week of February left Bollywood in a slump.
Amid this gloomy scenario, hopes were pinned on Chhaava, which was released on February 14. The film quickly caught the attention of critics and audiences alike. National media outlets praised the movie, specifically mentioning Vicky Kaushal’s stellar performance as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Although it is a historical film, the film opened well and since it is going to be a public holiday tomorrow in Maharashtra, on the occasion of Chatrapathi Sivaji’s birth anniversary, the makers expect huge turnout of audiences at theatres.
Rashmika Mandanna, who played his wife, Yesu Bai, also received appreciation for her impactful performance despite limited screen time. The film’s emotional and intense scenes left audiences both moved and thrilled.
Meanwehile, Chhaava has been steadily gaining popularity, not just in the North but also in the South, particularly in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Theatres are buzzing with energy as young audiences cheer for the film, chanting slogans like “Jai Shivaji, Jai Bhavani, Sambhaji Maharaj Ki Jai!”
The box office numbers tell a promising story. According to trade reports, Chhaava collected ₹33.10 crore gross on its opening day, followed by ₹39.30 crore gross on the second day, and a whopping ₹49.3 gross crore on Sunday. This brings its worldwide gross collection to ₹121.43 crore in just three days. The film has set a new record for Vicky Kaushal, as it’s the first time one of his movies has crossed double-digit crores on the first day.
Trade experts predict that the film could cross the ₹50 crore mark in gross earnings tomorrow, on the eve of Shivaji’s birth anniversary, potentially pushing it into the ₹200 crore club by Thursday. If the momentum continues, Chhaava could be the much-needed hit Bollywood has been waiting for.
May be, it’s time the makers dub the film to Telugu as well!
