Summer Battle: Cricket Fever vs. Box Office Rush

The biggest cricket festival IPL 2025 is about to begin. The players from across India and around the world arriving to entertain fans for two months. With matches happening daily for over 60 days, there is growing concern in the film industry about how this will impact movie releases. Though the tournament happens every year, its popularity has been skyrocketing.

On one side, there’s the intense summer heat. On the other side, the unstoppable craze of cricket.

In general, people won’t visit theaters unless a movie gets good word-of-mouth. This makes the summer a crucial test for filmmakers. Matches in cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Kolkata always attract huge audiences, with places like Lucknow, Delhi, and Rajasthan following closely.

Since all games start at 7:30 PM, evening and late-night movie shows will undoubtedly be affected. If a film gets excellent reviews, it can survive, but average or flop movies will struggle.

The real challenge begins in the second week of April, with big movies lined up for release. Films like Jack and Harihara Veeramallu will hit theaters, followed by more big-budget films every week.

If a movie is truly impressive, IPL won’t hurt its box office run. In fact, the summer heat and the comfort of AC theaters could even bring in audiences for morning and afternoon shows. However, four films releasing in late March—including some dubbed ones—will be the first to face the impact of cricket fever.

The big question remains: can cinema hold its ground against the IPL craze?
