Suriya, once well-loved in Telugu states with movies like Gajini, Singam series, 24 and many more, has not had a proper hit in recent years. There was a time when his films did ₹20 crore business in Telugu, and even average films used to earn at least ₹10 crores. But with a series of flops, his popularity hits bottom at the box office.
Fans had high hopes for Kanguva, expecting it to bring Suriya back to form. The producer even claimed the movie could earn ₹2000 crores, which seemed like an overstatement but still created a lot of buzz. Unfortunately, the movie struggled and could only make around ₹100 crores over all, which was a big disappointment.
Before the release, Suriya was full of energy and promoted Kanguva all over India, including in the Telugu states. But after the film flopped, his mood seemed low. It was clear the failure of Kanguva had affected him.
The poor performance of Kanguva is also hurting Retro. With Hit-3 releasing around the same time, Retro will the second option here in telugu states. Advance bookings are dull for Retro, and unless the movie gets very good talk from audiences, it might not recover its costs. At this point, Retro looks more like a formality than a strong theatrical release.
