India First: Cinema Takes a Step Back

The Indian film industry is slowing down due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. Multiple film industries across the country are altering their release dates and rescheduling or cancelling promotional events in light of the current situation, while also expressing their support for the Indian Armed Forces during these difficult times.

Yesterday, the makers of Rajkummar Rao’s Bhool Chuk Maaf announced that the film would skip its theatrical release and premiere directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. The film was originally scheduled to hit theatres today (May 9).

Today, Kamal Haasan released an official statement announcing the postponement of his upcoming film Thug Life’s audio launch, which was scheduled for May 16. The new date will be announced later, once the situation is deemed appropriate. “Art can wait. India comes first,” Kamal stated in his note.

The press meet for Samantha’s maiden production venture, Subham, which was scheduled for this evening, has also been cancelled. Reportedly, we may see many more such postponements and cancellations in the days ahead.

On another note, the 2025 edition of the IPL has been suspended indefinitely due to the ongoing conflict. Given the large gatherings expected at stadiums during matches, the BCCI decided to pause the tournament, extending full support to the Indian government and Armed Forces.

If tensions between the two nations persist, we may witness even more disruptions and changes in the entertainment industry in the coming days.
