Skipping May 30: A Smart Move for Big Films?

Until recently, May 30 was shaping up to be a big day for Telugu cinema. Films like Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom and Pawan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu were eyeing this date. But things have changed and not just because of unfinished work. The country’s tense atmosphere and uncertain conditions have forced producers to rethink their plans.

Although makers are putting May 30 as release date on posters, the decision may change at any moment, says one of the inside source. Kingdom is still in post-production, and composer Anirudh hasn’t completed the re-recording yet. That alone would justify a delay. But what made the situation more complicated is the rising tension across the country, especially in North India. With the threat of conflict looming and public gatherings being avoided, theatre turnouts have dropped in many cities, particularly in the Hindi belt.

Similarly, Hari Hara Veera Mallu, which was planned as a massive release across India, is also stepping away from May 30. Producer AM Ratnam wants the film to do justice to Pawan Kalyan’s image, especially in Bollywood. But there’s no time for dubbing, promotions, or a safe environment to launch big. So the team is now aiming for a release in June.

With these films out of the way, Bhairava, starring Bellamkonda Sai Sreenivas, Manchu Manoj and Nara Rohit will now take the May 30 slot. Since it’s a remake with a modest budget, the makers don’t see much risk. If the film gets positive word-of-mouth, it could benefit from the lack of competition and draw in audiences looking for a mass entertainer.

In the bigger picture, letting go of May 30 might actually work out better for stars like Pawan Kalyan and Vijay Deverakonda. If the current unrest settles down by June, it could be a safer and more profitable time to release big films. Under normal conditions, May 30 would’ve been a great date. But this year, it seems like a smart call to wait.
