Bollywood Faces Backlash from Its Own Stars

What used to be the face of Indian cinema has now turned into a target of criticism. For some reason, many celebrities who work in Bollywood are now lashing out at it for its work culture, films, and many other factors. Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, actors Suneil Shetty, Kalki Koechlin, Nawazuddin Siddique and Mimon Chakravarthy are some of the celebrities who raised their voice against the Hindi film industry in recent times. Now, actress Jacqueline Fernandez has joined the list.

Speaking on the stereotypes in Bollywood in a recent interview, Jacqueline said, “I think sometimes it gets misinterpreted for okay, well then let’s stereotype you and let’s put you in these roles and let’s get you to these because that’s what you’re suited to, and that has pretty much been my journey.”

She said that she is grateful for all the work she has done and the work that has helped her to get to this point. But at the same time, she always tries to do more, push herself, grow, rise and explore as an actor. She stated that, however, it became challenging to get versatile roles because she is often judged and offered roles according to the persona she has. These statements reflect Jacqueline’s disappointment over getting stereotypical roles in Bollywood from the Hindi filmmakers, which restrained her from pushing her acting abilities.

Earlier, Anurag Kashyap said that Bollywood has become toxic and everyone is chasing unrealistic financial targets and wants to make a 1000 crore film. He also announced that he is exiting the industry and asserted that he would focus on South Indian movies. Responding to the faded multi-starrer culture in Bollywood, actor Suniel Shetty said that the current generation of actors is insecure and thus, they do not team up for ensemble films anymore. Actress Kalki Koechlin said that Bollywood is currently in a recession and needs creative stimulation. Nawazuddin Siddique called out Bollywood for promoting ‘stars’ over ‘actors’. He said that even though people prefer real talent, Bollywood promotes stars and continues making films with them even when they don’t perform well at the box office. Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty’s son, Namashi Chakraborty, said that Bollywood people are very fake and criticised the industry for its favouritism.

Earlier, we wouldn’t come across these many people calling out at the industry and its culture. However, surprisingly, many popular celebrities are calling out at Bollywood these days, raising doubts on the industry and its work culture.
