Kamal Approaches Court; Karnataka Theatres Angered Further

Kamal Haasan is currently busy with the promotions of his new film Thug Life. As the film gears up for a grand release this Friday, the controversy surrounding the movie is getting intense. Kamal Haasan’s statement that Kannada has evolved from the Tamil language did not go well with the pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka, who announced a ban on the film. Kamal approached the high court, but the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce is not feared.

When everyone demanded an apology from Kamal Haasan, he refused to do so. He clarified that his statements came out of love and that love does not apologize. As a result, the Karnataka groups are angry with Kamal Haasan and have decided not to screen the movie.

Kamal Haasan was quick enough to approach the High court seeking protection for his movie. As soon as the news came out, Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president Narasimhulu also reacted strongly. “Let him go to the court, but none of our theatres will screen his movie,” he said, threatening a ban on the movie.

“This is not just a film industry issue anymore, it’s become a state and language issue. We’ve received a letter from the government. Everyone, pro-Kannada organisations, politicians, and the people, is demanding an apology,” he added.

On the other hand, Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar seems to be soft on the issue. “Let me look at the details. We’re all neighbours, not enemies. I urge everyone to remain calm and patient,” he said.

Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, and featuring Kamal Haasan, Simbhu, Trisha, Abirami, Jo Jo George and others is hitting the screens on June 5th.
