In Bollywood, most big-ticket films have traditionally stuck to runtimes under three hours. Compared to Telugu cinema, where longer films are more common, Hindi films often aim for tighter, faster storytelling. Actor Akshay Kumar even pointed this out recently during Kannappa promotions, saying the main difference between Hindi and Telugu cinema is the length, Telugu films run around three hours, while Hindi ones usually don’t.
Now, War 2, which also marks Jr NTR’s Hindi debut, seems set to challenge that norm. As per overseas multiplex listings, the film is currently marked with a tentative runtime of 3 hours and 10 minutes. While the final cut is yet to be officially locked by the makers, sources suggest this duration will stay more or less the same. If it holds, War 2 will become one of the lengthiest Hindi films in the last 15 years, second only to Animal, which crossed 3 hours and 20 minutes.
Part of YRF’s Spy Universe, War 2 is the sixth installment in the franchise. Earlier films like Ek Tha Tiger, War and Pathaan mostly stayed under 2 hours 45 minutes. This makes War 2 a notable exception, not just for its runtime but also for its tone. The recently released trailer hints at a shift in approach, mixing large-scale action with a strong emotional angle.
Director Ayan Mukerji had earlier mentioned that while the action between Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR will be a major highlight, it’s the emotional depth and drama that will leave a lasting impact. This is a new addition for the Spy Universe, which has mostly leaned on style, stunts and spectacle so far.
Advance bookings for War 2 will open on August 1. The film will release in Hindi and Telugu, with versions also available in IMAX, Dolby Vision, Dolby ATMOS, 4DX and D-Box formats.
The long runtime and emotional core suggest that War 2 is aiming for something bigger than just another action thriller. It also signals the increasing influence of South Indian storytelling in mainstream Bollywood cinema.
