Before its release, Coolie carried huge expectations. Fans believed it would easily enter the 1000 crore club. But things didn’t go as planned. Word of mouth has been weak, and director Lokesh Kanagaraj seemed unable to handle the massive hype.
Even with a star-packed cast and a huge budget, the film hasn’t been used to its full potential. After one full week, Coolie still hasn’t crossed 500 crores worldwide. It may earn more over the weekend, but the big question remains, how did such a golden chance slip away?
For Tamil cinema, this was a rare and powerful combination, but the opportunity is now lost. Vijay’s next film Jananaayagan is coming, but since it is directed by Vinoth, who doesn’t have the same market strength as Lokesh, expectations are low. Adding to that, Vijay’s active political role may also bring challenges, like fewer theaters, blocked benefit shows, or stronger competition from other films. His open criticism of the ruling party could make things harder.
Looking ahead, Kollywood doesn’t seem close to another 1000 crore film. Jailer 2 could be a hope, but it is expected only in 2026. Ajith has slowed down with films, as Vidamuyarchi flopped and Good Bad Ugly did only average business. Kamal Haasan’s Indian 3 might be huge if it releases, but there is no clarity on when that will happen. For now, Kollywood’s dream of a 1000 crore film feels distant.
