Rashmika Mandanna’s maiden female-oriented flick, The Girlfriend, opened to positive word of mouth at the box office. This Rahul Ravindran directorial portrays the life of a young woman who is entangled in a toxic relationship with an aggressive and “macho” young man.
Due to its realistic portrayal of toxic relationships, The Girlfriend got good critical and popular acclaim.
Despite of its niche appeal, the film had a decent run at the box office during its release weekend because of the positive talk and the youngsters connecting to the story. However, the real litmus test begins today, as it remains to be seen how the film fares during these weekdays.
The Girlfriend needs to sustain its momentum this week to become a clean hit at the box office. So, we have to see if the film’s content and Rashmika’s stardom will pull audiences to theatres in the coming days.
Having no real competitor at the box office can be an advantage for The Girlfriend. But how far will it pull the audiences to the theatres on working days remain a question. If it passes this weekday challenge, then Rashmika might join the league of actresses like Anushka and Nayanthara, who can make female-oriented films successful with their stardom.
