Superstar Rajinikanth’s 1999 release Padayappa ( Narasimha) was one of the biggest blockbusters in his illustrious career and also in the history of South cinema. Besides Rajinikanth’s whistle-worthy performance, yesteryear actress Ramya Krishna’s menacing act in a negative role was the film’s biggest highlight. After 25 years, Padayappa is returning back to screens to celebrate Rajinikanth’s fifty years of cinema this December 12th, coinciding with his birthday.
Interestingly, Rajnikanth came forward like never-before to promote the re-release of Padayappa and shared his experience on working for this memorable film through a video interview. In a big surprise, Rajinikanth came up with an unexpected statement that the sequel to Padayappa is in works. What is more shocking is that the sequel will centre on the iconic Neelambari character essayed by Ramya Krishna. He himself revealed that the team is planning to bring Padayappa 2 based on Neelambari character. Those who watched Padayappa will know the impact created by Neelambari’s character.
While Rajinikanth’s announcement created a huge stir among audience, it also raised several questions on the story and about the chances for the sequel to materialise.
Many are now curious to know whether the sequel will dive into Neelambari’s flashback story or follow a completely fresh script. Since she was died in Part 1, fans are eager to know how her character will be brought back into the narrative. Moreover, another question is whether they can create adequate hype with a new subject ?
Even if they come up with a proper script, the team will need to find a director who can handle it effectively because KS Ravi Kumar, who helmed Padayappa, left direction long back. Also, many feel that a classic and iconic film like Padayappa should not be touched again as it may result in huge embarassment if they fail to recreate the magic.
Though it is too early to speculate about the sequel, many believe that the announcement might be just aimed to create some hype around the re-release. Whatever may be the reason behind Rajinikanth’s big statement, the re-release of Padayappa is bound to create massive hysteria because his fans are taking it on a prestigious manner and getting ready celebrate it on a grand note. There is strong anticipation among Kollywood audience because Padayappa is not available on any digital platform as it was not sold to any OTT partner so far and also not available on YouTube as well.
