Sequels seem to be the flavour of season in Indian cinema. While some directors are bringing sequels simultaneously after the first part, some are trying their luck by reviving scripts from their iconic movies of the past. Bollywood filmmakers are mostly following the second strategy.
Now, it is the turn of Bollywood’s most successful director Rajkumar Hirani to jump on the sequel bandwagon. As per reliable sources, Hirani is getting ready to work on the sequel to his cult blockbuster 3 Idiots, a youthful college drama starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in lead roles. Reportedly, Hirani has completed the script work for the sequel and the project is likely to go on floors very soon.
3 Idiots, which released in 2009 and emerged as huge blockbuster, has left an indelible impact on moviegoers and joined the elite list of most loved Indian films ever. So, the plans to make a sequel on such a crowd pleasing hit might evoke a massive buzz among audience all over the country.
But the question is whether Hirani can repeat the same magic after such a long gap ? The biggest challenge will be to convince the current generation audience because numerous movies based on a similar concept and genre have been made all these years after 3 Idiots in different languages. Moreover, there will be huge expectations on this sequel in particular and Hirani will need to come up with an output that matches the hype.
After 3 Idiots, Hirani delivered massive hits with PK and Sanju. His last outing Dunki received mixed reports and performed moderately at the box office. He was supposed to team up with Aamir Khan for the biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke. However, the project was put on hold due to unknown reasons. So, Hirani revived his long pending idea to do a sequel to 3 Idiots with Aamir Khan.
It would be interesting to see whether both Aamir Khan and Hirani can deliver again with the sequel that would stand up to the high expectations or not ?
