Animation is one section in which Indian films did not thrive well enough at the box office so far. Given animation’s long history of low theatrical performance, our filmmakers hardly try to explore the genre as they fear losing money due to lack of adequate anticipation from audience in any language.
However, the smashing box office success of Zootopia 2 across the globe, especially in China, has now given a new hope for Indian directors to come up with animated films which will be a viable and best alternative to deliver money spinners at the box office.
Moreover, the roaring commercial success of Mahavatar Narasimha earlier this year has also showcased the untapped potential for animated movies in India. The film amassed arround 300 Crores from Indian market alone.
Zootopia 2, made on a budget of 2000 Crores, has now notched up close to 10,000 Crores ($ 1.137 Billion ) gross worldwide, out of which more than half of the collections were from the Chinese market. The magnitude of success of Zootopia 2 is so mammoth that it will embolden new age filmmakers all over the globe to attempt animation movies and test their luck at the box office.
Though films in animation genre will take plenty of time to connect with domestic audience and require more creative efforts, there is ample scope to explore different subjects using animation as a core technical theme. The striking success of Mahavatar Narasimha at the pan-India box office and the storm created by Zootopia 2 worldwide will give a big opportunity for our directors to attempt many such films in future.
