James Cameron’s tentpole franchise Avatar has now seen the release of its third installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which hit the screens this Friday. While the first two films in the franchise turned into epic blockbusters, the third part has opened to mixed talk from audiences and critics alike. The final box office verdict of the latest sequel will be clear in the coming days. In this installment, viewers witness the emergence of the Mangkwan, a violent clan that dwells near the volcanic fires of Pandora.
It is well known fact that James Cameron long back announced his Avatar saga to span a total of five movies. The fourth part is already partially shot by Cameron and the production will resume shortly as the Avatar: Fire and Ash has finally made it to the screens three years after the release of second film in the franchise.
But, Cameron himself has no idea on when the fourth part will release. When he was asked during a recent interview by a leading Hollywood outlet about the release date, Cameron sarcastically replied “I’m gonna pose a metaphor to you: when a woman is in labour, she’s just crowning, would you ask her about her next child? Okay, I just delivered this thing.”
This comments are currently viral on social media platforms because of the craze for the franchise among audience. Even if the third part ends up with a mixed talk and collects decent numbers worldwide, there will still be huge anticipation for the next installment due to a section of audience who still adore the visuals and technical values.
Planning a five-film franchise is a massive risk, and even a filmmaker like James Cameron may find it hard to sustain interest. While it is still too early to judge the full story, the fact that parts of the sequels have already been filmed has raised concerns. Many in the audience are not ready to embrace the same story and setting being repeated again and again, and the next film could face fatigue rather than excitement.
Cameron will have two options going ahead with the Avatar franchise. One thing is that many are expecting the director to explore a new world to make it more interesting or end the franchise here itself and shelve the remaining parts and move on to other project.
