Avatar Fire and Ash was released with huge expectations in India. From the start, the buzz around the film was strong. However, after its December 19 release, the response turned out to be mixed.
While audiences agreed that the visuals were stunning, many felt director James Cameron disappointed them with a slow narrative and a familiar storyline. The long runtime of nearly three and a half hours also tested the patience of viewers.
Trade reports suggest the film has earned around Rs 85 crore Net in India so far. The target was well above Rs 450 crore. The strong run of other films like Dhurandhar and several new Telugu and Tamil releases added pressure.
Weekday occupancies have fallen below twenty percent, worrying distributors. Although Sunday saw some occupancies, the sudden fall from Monday raised serious concerns.
Finally, Avatar Fire & Ash appears headed for a major disaster in India. James Cameron earlier hinted that the franchise could stop if this part failed. Reports say he has already moved on to other stories.
Even if Avatar 4 happens, it may not generate the same hype as earlier films. Compared to Avatar and Avatar The Way of Water, this third part has fallen far behind. Many did not expect such a poor performance, but current trends suggest even Rs 150 crore may be difficult to achieve.
