Padma Bhushan Mammootty – A Befitting Recognition

The government of India has announced this year’s Padma awards ahead of the Republic Day. Legendary actor Mammootty has been bestowed with the coveted Padma Bhushan award by the committee. This is a befitting tribute for his immense contribution to Malayalam cinema with a prolific career which is punctuated by numerous memorable roles.

Mammootty is regarded as one of the biggest stalwarts of Malayalam film industry because of he is among those fewest actors who brought huge fame to Mollywood beyond Kerala with his stardom and popularity. He is a towering personality who elevated the image of Mollywood at national and global level with his commendable performances for more than five decades.

Born in 1951 as Muhammad Kutty Panaparambil Ismail and later assumed the moniker Mammootty, he made his screen debut in 1971 with the drama film Anubhavangal Paalichakal. He initially started his career as a supporting actor and later transformed into a lead protagonist. He slowly established as a bankable hero and rose to stardom with several performance driven characters.

Some of his iconic roles came from films like Bramayugam, Bheeshma Parvam, Ore Kadal, Thalapathi, Pathemari, Raja Manikyam, Kottayam Kunjachan, Prajapati, Bus Conductor. He appeared in Telugu film Swathi Kiranam and impressed Tollywood moviegoers with his subtle performance.

Throughout his glorious career, Mammootty won several laurels for his remarkable acting mettle. He won three national film awards and seven Kerala State film awards. For his distinguished service in cinema, the government of India has conferred him with the fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri in 1998. He was also the recipient of the second highest Kerala award ‘Kerala Prabha’ in 2022.

After nearly 30 long years, he is once again lavished with a Padma award by the government of India and this time it is Padma Bhushan. This recognition is long overdue because he is regarded as one of the trailblazers who took Malayalam cinema to dizzy heights with his contribution.

The fact that he acted in more than 400 films in a career spanning 55 years stands testimony to the services he rendered to the world of cinema. Even at the age of 74 years, Mammootty continues to lead the Malayalam cinema from the front with his crowd pleasing and critically acclaimed roles. He has lined up as many as five films for the next couple of years.
