Drishyam is arguably one of the most successful franchises of Indian cinema till date because the crime thriller has achieved a rare distinction after it turned out to be a box office blockbuster in every language it was remade including the original version. It also won critical acclaim besides achieving commercial success.
After a gap of five years, the third installment of Drishyam is getting ready to hit the screens on May 21. Ahead of Drishyam 3 release in Malayalam, the makers wanted to build some hype among moviegoers and create a strong buzz to secure solid openings. So, they have re-released the second installment in theatres on April 10.
Unfortunately, the plan has misfired as the re-release turned out be a colossal failure with negligible collections. As per trade reports, Drishyam 2 collected less than 5 lakhs and failed to recover even theatrical and rental expenses and shocked the entire industry because the franchise has a massive reputation in Kerala.
The Mohan Lal starrer was released through Amazon Prime OTT platform in 2021and didn’t have a theatrical window due to COVID scare and emerged as a digital blockbuster because of its tremendous viewership following on the craze and success of the first franchise.
The makers anticipated impressive footfalls for re-release and expected that the strategic move will generate buzz for the third installment which is due for release next month. But, the disastrous reception came a big blow for the team. They should now start aggressive promotions to amplify the hype on the film.
Directed by Jeetu Joseph, Drishyam 3 will see Mohanlal reprise his iconic role, with Meena, Ansiba Hassan, and Esther Anil returning to their characters. Backed by Aashirvad Cinemas, the film once again retained the core team of technicians including composer Anil Johnson.
