Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has confirmed that his controversial film The Bengal Files will finally release in West Bengalon May 15, following the recent electoral victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.
The announcement comes months after the film reportedly faced difficulties securing theatrical screenings in Bengal during its nationwide release in 2025.
Agnihotri, known for directing politically charged films such as The Kashmir Files, had earlier alleged that theatre owners in Bengal were pressured against screening the movie.
He also claimed that multiple FIRs and political opposition created obstacles for the film’s release under the previous administration led by Mamata Banerjee.
After the BJP’s historic win in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Agnihotri took to social media to confirm the release date and thanked supporters who had demanded the film’s screening in the state.
The film, which explores events linked to Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, remains one of Agnihotri’s most debated projects.
Despite criticism from several quarters, supporters argue that the movie presents an important historical narrative that deserves wider public viewing.
