Dhurandhar 2 Exposed Sensitive Information of Armed Forces?

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to examine concerns raised over the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge, after a plea alleged that certain scenes in the movie could reveal sensitive information related to India’s armed forces despite the film being presented as a work of fiction.

The plea was filed by Deepak Kumar, a Head Constable (Communications) with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), who argued that the movie violated provisions of the Official Secrets Act by allegedly depicting tactical procedures of the armed forces and exposing details related to undercover operations.

Deepak Kumar contended that the film showed how Indian undercover agents operate in foreign countries and disclosed sensitive operational methods and locations, potentially posing a threat to national security and integrity. He also argued that the CBFC does not consult intelligence officers while certifying films dealing with national security issues.

The Court noted that Deepak’s apprehensions could not be dismissed outright and remarked that even fictional films can have real-world consequences. The bench observed that if a film reveals strategic methods or confidential procedures related to the armed forces, the matter requires careful scrutiny.

Disposing of the plea, the High Court directed the competent authorities in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the CBFC to treat the petition as a formal representation and take an informed decision on the concerns raised. The Court also ordered that any decision or corrective measures taken by the authorities must be communicated to the petitioner.

Directed by Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar franchise featured Ranveer Singh in the lead role. It has become a big blockbuster at the box office.
