Pattudala Movie Review

Ajith, who is balancing his racing and film career at the same time, is back with his new film Vidaamuyarchi. The action drama has been dubbed into Telugu as Pattudala and hit the screens on February 6, 2025. Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, and Regina Cassandra play key roles. Read our review here.

Plot

Arjun (Ajith) and Kayal (Trisha) are a couple going through a divorce in Azerbaijan. Before parting ways, they decide to take one last trip together. Unfortunately, their car breaks down along the way. At this point, they encounter another couple, played by Arjun Sarja and Regina Cassandra. While Arjun stays behind to get his car fixed, Kayal joins them and rests at a restaurant. However, by the time Arjun returns to pick her up, Kayal is missing. Who kidnapped her? How does Arjun find her? The answers to these questions form the core of Pattudala.

Performances

Ajith looks stylish in the film, but since it was shot in patches, his appearance varies—he looks slim in some scenes and slightly heavier and older in others. However, his strong screen presence holds the attention and saves the day. Trisha looks gorgeous as always and supports Ajith well. Unfortunately, her character lacks depth, leaving her with little to do apart from being a spectator in the narrative.

Arjun Sarja delivers a decent performance, though one might feel that a younger actor could have added more impact to the narrative. Regina Cassandra does well in her role and has an impressive screen presence. However, due to weak storytelling, both she and Arjun occasionally come across as over the top.

Technical Aspects

Magizh Thirumeni has directed Pattudala, but his story is weak and inspired by several Hollywood films. He has taken elements from various thrillers and stitched them together to form a narrative. Anirudh is a strength in any film, but he becomes a negative factor for Pattudala. Not one song or his BGM elevates the film. After a point, one gets the feeling that Anirudh signed on for just the paycheck and completed his work with a lazy mood.

Editing by N. B. Srikanth could have been much better, particularly in the first half. One of the highlights of the film is the solid visuals from Azerbaijan, which have been captured well in all the montage shots and action sequences. The Telugu dubbing is satisfactory, and so is the production design.

Positives

Ajith’s performance
Chase sequences

Negatives

Outdated story
Dull screenplay
Lack of depth in emotions
Slow pace

Analysis

Magizh Thirumeni had only one goal in mind: to showcase Ajith in a new action-packed avatar, leveraging his reputation for speed and racing. Hence, a thriller filled with chases, action, thrills, and suspense was chosen. From the outset, it is clear that Pattudala is heavily inspired by several Hollywood films. Once you come to terms with this, the film’s slow buildup to the conflict becomes tedious.

When the hero’s wife gets kidnapped, one would expect adrenaline-pumping thrills, but the way Ajith’s character investigates her disappearance is dull to the core. His interactions with the villagers and the way he uncovers the kidnappers’ identities lack impact and are narrated in an unimaginative manner.

The screenplay lacks depth, giving Ajith hardly any opportunity to showcase his acting prowess. Additionally, the characters of Arjun and Regina become increasingly silly as the film progresses, and the menace required for a thriller of this nature is completely missing. Their subplot further adds to the film’s monotony, making the overall experience even more tiresome.

By the time the film reaches its climax, the audience is already disengaged. Finally, director Magizh Thirumeni fails to craft an engaging screenplay that holds attention through emotions or thrills, making Pattudala a dull watch. Skip it in theaters and wait for its OTT release.

Bottom Line: A Forgettable Ride

Rating: 2/5
