“They Asked To Remove…”: Aamir On Dangal’s Release In Pakistan

Dangal is one of the landmark films in Aamir Khan’s career. Released in 2016, this Nitesh Tiwari boxing drama became a huge blockbuster and remains one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. Meanwhile, Dangal wasn’t released in Pakistan back when it hit the theatres, and Aamir revealed the reason behind it.

During his recent appearance on a TV show, Aamir Khan revealed that Pakistan’s Censor Board asked the team to remove the Indian flag visuals and Indian national anthem sequence in the climax. At that moment, Aamir decided not to release the film in Pakistan, saying that he has no interest in someone who asks to remove the Indian flag and national anthem from his film.

He said, “When Dangal was released, Disney was one of the producers and they also presented the project. When they screened the film for the Pakistan Censor Board, the board members asked our team to remove the Indian flag and the Indian national anthem when Geeta Phogat wins a match. The board said that the film can’t be released the film in Pakistan without these changes.”

“Within a moment, I told my team that we would not be releasing the film in Pakistan. I didn’t want to talk about it as well. My team said that it might affect the film’s business. Then, I said that I have no interest in someone who asks me to remove our national flag and national anthem from my film,” Aamir added.

Currently, Aamir is awaiting the release of his next film, Sitaare Zameen Par. Directed by RS Prasanna, this movie is set for a worldwide release on June 20.
