Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly shaping the tech world, but it is also bringing new challenges. One such concern has surfaced in the recruitment process, where candidates are reportedly using AI tools to cheat during interviews.
At Google, employees raised this issue directly with CEO Sundar Pichai. Responding to their concerns, Pichai announced a major change, from now on, at least one round of job interviews will be conducted face-to-face.
Virtual interviews became popular during the pandemic, saving time and costs. However, with AI tools now helping candidates answer questions and even create fake presentations, hiring managers are finding it harder to judge real skills. Pichai acknowledged that in-person interviews are essential to understand a candidate’s true ability and how well they fit into the company’s culture.
Google’s Vice President of Recruitment, Brian Ong, also admitted that while virtual interviews are convenient, they often fail to reveal a candidate’s actual strengths. Hence, moving at least part of the hiring process back to physical interviews has become necessary.
This challenge is not unique to Google. Tech giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are also facing the same problem. In many cases, candidates manage to crack interviews with AI support but struggle later to perform in real jobs.
As a result, the entire tech industry is now being forced to rethink and redesign its hiring methods in the age of AI.
