The local body elections in Andhra Pradesh took a violent turn after several disturbances were recorded across the state during the nomination filing procedure. Though Andhra Pradesh elections are generally violent in nature, this new set of events have shocked many to a great extent.
Former chief minister YS Jagan has taken the occasion to react on this matter today as he addressed the media about the lead up events.
Jagan instructed the people of Andhra Pradesh to take to the streets and protect the democracy on their own as tolerating such violent politics will threaten their lives in the future.
If the people do not protest the violence that was set in motion during the nomination procedure, they might pay the price in the future. Their lives will be a risk and their properties might also be taken away, just like the way the nomination papers were snatched away from our party leaders.
Jagan has cited incidents in areas including Punganur, Tirupati, Kadapa, Pulivendula, Rayachoti and Badvel, alleging that candidates and party workers faced attacks during the nomination process.
He has also questioned the role of the Andhra Pradesh police and the State Election Commission. He accused them of failing to ensure a level playing field.
The former chief minister has further questioned the decision to proceed with the elections using the existing voter list, raising concerns over the revision of electoral rolls.
Earlier in 2021, even Jagan had held the local body election procedure in a similar manner as fights and disharmony broke out all across the state. But now he is in front of the media, advocating on the same manner. But beyond political lines, it is the public safety, which is in question and that needs to be tended to.
